On Getting it Wrong, in the Wake of Mardi Gras--veinglory
Back in August of last year I thought an open poll might be one way to see which e-publishers have good reputations. Within a few days Mardi Gras was in 3rd place and by the time I took the poll down they were winning by a landslide, by May of this year I was warning of problems and by this August they were clearly on the way out. Commentators on the initial poll mentioned the down side of popular polls including ballot stuffing and people voting based on the high of being accepted rather than any real knowledge. And I rather ignored these points and suggested that presses able to inspire that many authors must be doing something right.

Oops.

But now the dust has settled I wonder if any authors for Mardi Gras and other failed presses might have experiences to share about how they do manage to inspire such enthusiasm, and what the first signs are that there is a lack of substance behind the glitter? Please drop us a comment or email.

As a p.s. I looked through publisher-related googled words over the last month to see what the googlers are interested in or worried about. Here are the top ten, make of it what you will:

Comments:
I've often seen great enthusiasm for a epress that quickly turns to silence. I tend (and this is the cynic in me) not to believe anything I hear until after the press has been open a while and paid some royalties.
That doesn't mean I won't take a chance. The Wild Rose Press was a risk to submit to when it opened, but I took it. I submitted knowing that I'd be one of the first and accepted the consequences. Luckily for me, TWRP has been one of the solid epubs.
Still, some publishers can surprise me.

Well, I guess that drew in some attention. Or at least Shadowrose discovered my May 23rd post about the today... for some reason. My thoughts about that publisher are somewhat different today but a blog is a snapshot in time--I don't go back and make changes. And the googling rather suggests people trying to make the owner-press connection just as I was. But, indeed, Shadowrose do not publish via Lulu so that speculation was awry.
