It has been reported at Romance Divas that Aphrodite's Apples has closed?

Edited to add:

Press Release: Aphrodite's Apples closes

Aphrodite's Apples is closing, effective February 13, 2008. It was a difficult decision to make on our part, but we feel it will be best for all parties involved. We are not having financial issues, and final royalties shall be calculated and paid out in a timely fashion. We appreciate all the time you've spent on this company, and consider it a privilege to have worked with our authors and readers.
Thank you,

--Aphrodite's Apples Press

Comments:
Site's down for updates, but as far as I know they're still open.
(according to my friend who works as an editor)

According to word of mouth, from one of their authors, they are closing, and books will be returned with a statement to come after. I don't know dates.

I heard that they've told authors that they will be returning their books to them shortly.

So, another one bites the dust.

I hadn't even heard of them.

I was wrong.
They're closed effective Feb 13

The official announcement from one of the two owners went out this morning. I've posted my own statement at my blog accordingly.

Because that is what we do when these things happen, no? We blog.

Whatever else would one do? :)

Yep, officially official now. I echo many of Katrina's statements, as we were in near identical positions. Not a founder, I came on initially as an author but then became their first EIC. I stepped down from administrative capacity in August of last year and was just an author again.

Unexpected? Not exactly. For the best? Probably.

Sad to see another E-publisher fold. I wasn't familiar with AA. Does anyone know why they decided to close down? Their press release said they were financially sound, so I wonder what happened. :-(

I wonder what took them so long...yawn...another fly-by-nighter flies away....

Something to bear in mind should the people behind AA start a new house in the future: I've seen a comment that they brought up the release of a book by a couple of days, so that they could release it on the day before they closed. It was originally due to be released the day after they closed, and thus if they hadn't released it early it would have been officially unpublished. This is consistent with information on AA's own blog and website.

This is a very author-unfriendly thing to do, because that book has now lost its first publication rights, and it will be significantly harder for the writer to take that book to another house (assuming that the rights are properly released, which isn't a given).

Jules,

One of the owners says she has no interest in starting a new company, and well this would be consistent with the fact that she wasn't interested in running the one that just closed. However, the other one has said she might start another house. Believe me, should her name turn up again? I will blog far and wide and tell all authors to beware.

(This is the closest any of you are going to get to "gossip" out of me so make of my comments what you will.)

That's indeed very nasty, Jules, especially now that many e-pub houses are starting to "close subs" to any material previously published (thanks to all these shady companies).

Though vaguely negative comments aside, I will say that so far, people are getting their releases back as promised. I got all of mine yesterday, and other authors have reported the same.

I'm firmly with Kitty on this whole issue, but I will say that the book you are speaking of was released before the decision to close was made. The one owner decided to close this weekend - Saturday, in fact.
