  Ocean's Mist Press: very alarming--veinglory
I had assumed Ocean's Mist was down for the count and the return of their website was some kind of error as the content such as 'news' announcements dated, for the most part, from 2006. However it has been brought to my attention that not only is the site still up they are listing a new, May 2008, release. The coming soon page has material with this same author "Essence" mixed with authors (some of whom probably should not be there at all).

In case it needs restating: avoid them, do not buy from them, warn others.

Edited to add:

Karen draws my attention to Author Crusader who says the new author 'Essence' is Noemi, the owner of OMP who sold books but didn't pay authors--she continues, apparently, to write for Loose Id and Siren. She adds: "Why would you know that this person has deceived people, stolen from people and have her around?" Is there an obligation to avoid publishing a writer who has been less than honest in her publishing endeavours? I genuinely don't know. I think publishing her maybe isn't a good look fir them whether it is technically okay or not, but they know the name being signed to their contract so I guess it's their call.

Edited again to add this response from Siren (see comment below)

"Hello, We want to set the record straight with regards to Essence. Essence does not write for Siren Publishing. We dropped her on March 25th once we discovered her legal name in her signed contracts is fake. Unfortunately, we do not keep track of who is who and do not always know who is hiding behind false information, but in this case we considered the contracts invalid as soon as we found out. Rest assured, we do not support misconduct in this industry where we value our authors and our readers. Sincerely, Diana DeBalko (aka Amanda Hilton), Publisher, Siren-BookStrand, Inc., www.sirenbookstrand.com "

The depressing thing is I thought the people who said OMP was opening up again were being just a wee bit paranoid. *Bzzzzt*, wrong.

If I were Loose Id or Siren, I'd drop her like a newborn giraffe on the African savannah. I hate seeing people get screwed, and I hate it even more when the jerks who screwed them go unpunished.

Jeez that sucks donkeys. My rights should have reverted a while ago but I'd never heard anything so I went ahead and placed my story elsewhere. OMP is still 'selling' it (not that I ever saw any royalties and not that Noemi ever replied to any of my mails about it).

If Loose Id and Siren have Noemi as one of their staff, I'm very dissappointed in them. It's just another slap in the face to authors. They don't care that they are giving an opportunity to a crook like Noemi.

Those houses presumeably contracted books by her based on the quality of her writing.
Whether it was wise of them to do so, considering her reputation for theft, etc. is quite another thing.

There's one pub I'll be crossing off my list of 'pubs I might be willing to sub to'. Don't know anything about Siren so they were never on the list, but I'm disappointed in LI. They seemed a good prospect, but contracting crooks? Not on.

Bernita, as a victim of OMP I won't be supporting ebook companies that harbor a "fugitive." Out of principal, I will never submit to or buy from Loose Id or Siren. This is more than just accepting a submission from a writer. Noemi has abused her own writers and Loose Id and Siren know it.

I suggest writing to Siren and LI telling them of this latest developement. A reader saying they won't buy from them anymore is a powerful statement.

*nods* I don't know much about Siren but LI is a good, reputable pub, I'm sure they don't know the history there.

Jolie, if I were in your position, I would do the same.

I'm sure when I read that she was working for LI a while back. Whomever it was also said that LI were well aware of who she was.

Just to point out - as evidenced by some of the EC/Sam/author/author kerfluffle lately, a publisher does not always know the other pseudonyms used by an author they contract.

Who knows if that's the case or not here.

I hardly see how you can blame these other publishers. Are they ripping anyone off? No. I'm sure they get thouands of submissions and have hundreds of authors, and last time I looked publishers don't need to do a background check on every author they sign.
